Set boundaries and remember that “NO” is a full sentence. Setting healthy boundaries and sticking to them affects your patience and overall health. It is okay if you can’t do everything or please everyone, and you don’t have to provide an explanation.

A Conversation with Brianna

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

A&M-Commerce is a university with a small-town atmosphere and the biggest heart. This campus provides an array of student organizations, majors and leadership opportunities to prepare for your future while building you as an individual. At A&M-Commerce, you can grow both personally and professionally.

What is an important life lesson you have learned?

Set boundaries and remember that “NO” is a full sentence. Setting healthy boundaries and sticking to them affects your patience and overall health. It is okay if you can't do everything or please everyone, and you don't have to provide an explanation. Just say “no” or “no, thank you.”

How have your experiences prepared helped you prepare for your career?

I've worked in education in some capacity for the last 10 years. Every role has prepared me to be a better communicator, build relations and rapport, and analyze the content, schedules, etc., to advise students on their degree plans.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

When I'm not working, I enjoy reading, spending time with friends, family or my dogs, and experiencing new things, including food, travel, entertainment, and more!

What is your favorite spot in Commerce? Why?

I have two. One is Garvin Lake, which has this serenity as the sun is setting over Commerce. It is a place where you can enjoy the sound of the fountain, contemplate anything on your mind, and just enjoy the moment. The second is the Chi Omega House, which will forever feel like home for me.

Who has been a role model for you?

There have been several individuals who have positively influenced me both professionally and personally over the years. However, the two I credit the most are Dr. Zach Shirley and Lori Vincent. Dr. Shirley is a dynamic and outstanding individual who never meets a stranger; you feel welcome and included from the first encounter. He has been there for me during many personal and professional difficulties. I credit him for pushing myself and others toward our love for higher education. Lori Vincent is an alumnus of A&M-Commerce and served as an advisor for the Chi Omega sorority for many years. She has a passion and love for this university and its students. She aided in developing my professional career and building me as a person. She has helped with personal branding, networking, patience and love for all individuals.
