First-Generation Students

First-generation students make up 67% of the undergraduate population at East Texas A&M. The university defines a first-generation student as an undergraduate or graduate student whose parent/s or guardian/s did not complete a four-year bachelor's college degree from an institution of higher education in the United States. If a student has only one primary parent or guardian, the education of the non-primary parent does not need to be considered.

The Office of First-Generation Success recognizes the multitude of family dynamics and understands that there may be students who identify as first-generation outside of this definition. We welcome all students who wish to engage with and receive support from our office—we are here to help.

First-Gen Lions is an extended mentorship program exclusively for first-generation students—those whose parents or guardians didn’t graduate from a four-year university in the United States. This amazing program provides a great academic experience and an excellent support network. First-Gen Lion members participate in L1ONS Summit, our first-generation student conference, attend workshops, work closely with our B1G Mentors, and attend social events for the First-Gen Lion community.
