What We Do
Campus Navigation
Our Foster Care Liaison program can help you identify and navigate campus resources that are free to you as an enrolled student.
Life Skills Coaching
Our liaisons are happy to work with you to help you develop (or brush up on) your life skills such as budgeting, planner organization, job readiness and other skills development through one-on-one meetings and workshops.
Student Advocacy and Support
The Office of Student Advocacy and Support offers case management services, the Lion Food Pantry, the Lion Wardrobe, and Victim Advocacy work.
Do I Qualify?
Your tuition and fees may be waived if:
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services until your 18th birthday (up until the day before your birthday is sufficient);
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on your 14th birthday or after, and you were eligible for adoption;
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on the day you graduated from high school or got your GED;
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on the day preceding the date you were adopted, if that date is on or after September 1, 2009;
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on the day preceding the date that your permanent managing conservatorship was awarded to a person other than your parent, if that date was on or after September 1, 2009; or
- You were in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services during an academic term in which you were enrolled in a dual credit course or other course for which a high school student may earn joint high school and college credit.
Required Documents
Under Texas Law, you should receive your identification documents when you turned 16. If you did not, contact your Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) worker and liaison to obtain these documents.

- Texas state identification card (ID or driver’s license)
- Immunization records
Students under age 22 must either receive a vaccination against bacterial meningitis or meet certain criteria for declining a vaccination before the first day of the semester. Do not wait! To learn more about submitting your records, email [email protected]

I have questions about financial aid. Who should I talk to?
Start with our Financial Aid Office which provides answers to most questions.Â
People told me to apply for FAFSA. What is that?
FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You need to fill out the application and submit it every year to be eligible for federal financial aid. Take a look at our FAFSA overview. Then, to get started filling out a FAFSA online, go to studentaid.gov. Your Foster Care Liaison can also assist you in filling out a FAFSA.
I am thinking about going to East Texas A&M. How can I start?

Can I get free tuition if I was a ward of another state?
No. You are not eligible for the Texas college tuition and fee exemption if you were in the conservatorship of another state.
I grew up in the foster care system, but then I was adopted. Do I still have the benefits?
If you were adopted from foster care or were eligible for adoption at age 14 or older, you may also be eligible for the exemption.
