Celebrating the Life of Professor Charles McGough
Transforming Art on the East Texas A&M Campus
Professor Charles McGough’s impact on the university’s art and design programs and on the Commerce community as a whole cannot be overstated. Chuck, or “Chas” as he is known in the art community, served as the first art department head beginning in 1956. Under his direction, the first “advertising” art department in a Texas college was established. The department he built received numerous research grants and regional accolades.
As a practicing artist and art director, Chas brought his expertise and excellence into the classroom during his 44 years at East Texas A&M. His students won awards in prestigious competitions and became leaders in their respective areas. This visionary and leader left us on March 29.
