2015 Scholarship Symposium hosted by CFEI
The Center for Faculty Excellence and Innovation (CFEI) will host a Scholarship Symposium during the spring semester. The symposium is a three-part event to support faculty with their scholarship endeavors, as well as give them a chance to learn scholarly publishing strategies and hear first-hand accounts about the process.
“The CFEI supports faculty in their quest for excellence in teaching and learning, and provides opportunities for their service to the university and beyond,” said Dr. Julie McElhany, director of CFEI. “Additionally, it is our aim to inspire and empower faculty in the area of scholarship. This Scholarship Symposium is one avenue of assisting faculty in pursuing excellence at Texas A&M University-Commerce.”
The symposium will kick off on February 25 with a panel discussion featuring representatives from the university's four colleges – Dr. Augustine Arize, College of Business; Dr. Salvatore Attardo, College of Humanities, Social Sciences & Art; Dr. Venu Cheriyath, College of Science and Engineering; and Dr. Jon Travis, College of Education and Human Services – and moderated by the Provost, Dr. Adolfo Benavides. They will share their experiences with the publication process and give audience members an opportunity for questions and answers. The discussion will start at 3 p.m. in RSC Traditions.
On March 2 guest speaker, Jeffrey Beall, will host a presentation about predatory publishers. The presentation, Don't Be Fooled: Recognizing and Avoiding Predatory Publishers, will give guests the information they need to recognize predatory publishers and avoid their traps. The talk will also cover related scholarly publishing scams such as fake scholarly metrics and hijacked journals. The presentation will take place in RSC Traditions from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3-4:30 p.m.
The symposium will finish on March 13 with a resource fair and workshops. Faculty are invited to the CFEI to gain helpful scholarship resources at the resource fair, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Faculty are also invited to attend scholarship-related workshops, hosted by Dr. Scott Lancaster of Gee Library, Diana Hines of the Writing Center, and Dr. Felicity Grandjean of CFEI, starting at 10 a.m. at the CFEI Conference Room. Starting at 9 a.m. there will also be a Writers' Workshop, facilitated by Anne Phifer of CFEI, in RSC Traditions and another starting at 12 p.m. in the Club at the RSC. The Writers' Workshops are intended to encourage faculty with their scholarly writing.
