A&M-Commerce Alum Scores Big With Dallas Stars Internship

The Texas A&M University-Commerce College of Business is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Katie Shaw, an exemplary student who graduated this August with a master's in Business Administration.

Shaw has secured a prestigious internship with the Dallas Stars, highlighting the College’s commitment to providing transformative educational experiences and fostering strong industry partnerships.

Beginning her academic journey at A&M-Commerce in Fall 2019, Shaw enrolled in the honors program as a Regent Scholar. Motivated by a scholarship opportunity and her family's legacy at the university, she chose the university for its supportive environment and proximity to her hometown, Greenville, Texas. Her journey through various majors ultimately led her to discover a passion for accounting, a field where she excelled and found her true calling.

Reflecting on her decision, Shaw shared, “I chose accounting because I've always been good with numbers and enjoyed math. The College of Business provided me with the tools and support to thrive in this field, and the mentorship from professors like Dr. Rankin and Dr. Ling made all the difference.”

Shaw's internship with the Dallas Stars came through the robust network and support of the College of Business faculty and alumni. Her role as an accounting intern involves auditing reimbursements, managing budgeting tasks and working on various projects that have deepened her understanding of the accounting profession within the sports industry.

“I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” Shaw said. “The practical experience I'm gaining is invaluable, and it's all thanks to the connections and support I received from the College of Business. This internship is helping me build a solid foundation for my future career.”

Dr. Caroline Hartmann, head of the Department of Accounting and Finance and Associate Professor of Accounting, praised Shaw's dedication and achievements.

“Katie exemplifies the qualities we aim to instill in our students—resilience, excellence, and a commitment to professional growth,” Hartmann said. “Her success is a testament to the strength of our programs and our focus on creating real-world opportunities for our students.”

Shaw's journey and accomplishments reflect the transformative power of A&M-Commerce's educational programs, as well as the College of Business's commitment to securing internships and fostering partnerships with top companies to ensure that students like Shaw are well-prepared for their professional journeys.

For prospective students considering the College of Business at A&M-Commerce, Shaw advises, “Don't be afraid to take the leap. The professors, staff, and fellow students are all there to support you. Participate in events and build relationships—it can lead to incredible opportunities.”
