A&M-Commerce Horse Wins First Race at Retama Park

Our Elegant Song, a racehorse born and raised in the equine program at Texas A&M University-Commerce, won her first at a race at Retama Park on Sept 19^th. This is only the third race for the young horse, who has already earned over $2,900 in prize money. She placed tenth at Evangeline Downs on June 12 and seventh at Retama Park on September 5.

“We are excited when everyone leaves one of our programs and becomes successful, and that includes animals that we bred, raised, and initially trained,” said Dr. Derald Harp, interim head and associate professor of agricultural sciences. “It is truly a thrill to know that a foal born on our farm and trained by students in our classes is now racing and winning! Our students see the direct benefit from their hard work and know that they made a difference in this horse's life.”

The equine program at A&M-Commerce works to improve students' skills in horse care and health, handling, and business related matters. The department currently offers ten undergraduate courses that range from horsemanship to equine veterinary techniques.  There is also a working barn where students can do a variety of tasks such as saddling up for a ride or working in an individual pen for halter training.

“As long as she races, Texas A&M University-Commerce will be listed as the breeder, and that provides recognition to the university and distinguishes our program as a reputable source for equine information,” said Dr. Harp. “We are building the resources to become the primary source of equine information for northeast and north central Texas, and her success helps us build that foundation for the outstanding faculty and students we have.”
