A&M-Commerce hosts ‘Datathon’ competition
The A&M-Commerce College of Business, in collaboration with Infosys, a global leader in next-generation technology and consulting, organized its annual Datathon competition on November 10, 2022.
Badri Devalla, senior director and head of AI & automation solutions at EdgeVerve delivered the keynote address in the “Traditions” room at the Rayburn Student Center (RSC). A total of 24 students working in teams of four participated in the competition by exploring a real-world challenge, identifying the problem statement and then proposing unique and creative solutions to address the problem.
One of the most anticipated College of Business events of the year, the Datathon competition provides students from across A&M-Commerce with a great experiential learning activity by providing them with a unique platform to demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving abilities. This year, the students worked on addressing an economic growth inequity challenge that is impacting rural Texas communities as well as that of our local community.
Ashiss Kumar Dash, executive vice president and global segment head at Infosys stated: “Infosys had the pleasure of collaborating with A&M-Commerce as a title sponsor for the ‘Datathon with Infosys' competition. This event has allowed students from varied backgrounds to come together to solve a unique problem under a high-stress environment simulating the real business environments of today.”
He continued: “It has opened the students to explore a new perspective and be agile in their process, which is what Infosys strives to achieve when we work with young and brilliant minds.”
The competition awarded $3,250 in prizes, with team Ginger, comprised of Hilina Worku, Farhan Munir, Aathira Nair and Shambhu Kunwar, receiving $1,500. In second place, team Shark's Tapasya Singh, Hussein Shatnawi, Amitava Bose Bapi and Syed M.A. Darda won a cash prize of $750, while team DHAC's Sukriti Khanal, Rohit Bheemaraju, Shivani Kandukuri and Venkatraman Balasubramanian received a cash prize of $400. The remaining 12 participants received a $50 consolation cash prize.
Dr. Anil Kumar, associate dean of the College of Business, spearheaded the event with Lacey Henderson, director of career development and Nirupa Jayakrishnan from Infosys.
Speaking about the event, Dr. Kumar said: “The energy that the students brought to this event created a transformative learning experience focusing on developing solutions for societal problems. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) numbers four and 11 as well as our mission of offering a transformational learning experience whereby students can create applied knowledge and forge impactful connections.”
