A&M-Commerce Kicks Off School Year with Lions Roar
COMMERCE, Texas — Texas A&M-Commerce has planned a wide variety of fun and informative events to kick off the new school year.
The Lions Roar Week coinciding with the first week of the fall semester will begin Monday, Aug. 25.
One of the highlights of this year’s events includes the Pride Party, a three-hour event that begins at 4 p.m. Aug. 25. The Pride Party, located in the ballrooms of the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center, gives students, faculty, and staff a chance to meet with local merchants and student organizations as well as enjoy refreshments, music, and give-a-ways.
On Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., the campus religious organizations are sponsoring fellowship, food, music, and give-a-ways. Also on the Aug. 26, author, professional speaker, and self-defense educator Erin Weed will share “Girls Fight Back” in the Texas Ballroom, a women-only presentation on self-defense. The presentation will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, Aug. 27, Rock the Vote with life-size images of the presidential candidates will be on the East Lawn of the student center. Students can get their photos made with the likenesses of John McCain, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton.
An open house at the student center is slated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Complimentary blue and gold snow cones will be available and there will also be a pool tournament.
From 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, students can attend the President’s Picnic, which is located at the President’s Home. Students can meet Dr. Dan Jones, new A&M-Commerce president, at the event.
Complimentary tickets are needed and can be obtained at the Candy Corner, located on the second floor of the student center, in order to attend. Tickets are necessary for the event and available with your student ID.
Students need to ride the shuttle to attend the picnic. Buses will leave the west side of the student center and Whitley Residence Hall parking lot starting at 4:45 p.m. Riders must present their picnic ticket when getting on the bus.
The Morris Recreation Center is hosting the MRC Birthday Bash from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. The event will feature bands and includes food, t-shirts giveaways, and other prizes.
On Friday, Aug. 29, students can experience simulated skydiving. X-Treme Air will be set up on the West Lawn of the Student Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To assist students throughout the week, LIONAID Pride information tents will be located in front of the Student Services and Ferguson Social Sciences buildings.
