A&M-Commerce Wins Grant for Community College Scholarships
COMMERCE, Texas — Community college students at four schools in the North and Northeast Texas regions are eligible for scholarships to attend Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Students at Paris Junior College, Navarro County College, Trinity Valley Community College, Eastfield, and Grayson County College planning to transfer to A&M-Commerce may apply for the scholarships. The $1,000 Rising to the Challenge scholarships are financially need-based and are for the 2008-2009 school year.
The scholarships are made possible by a $25,000 grant from The Greater Texas Foundation awarded to A&M-Commerce.
“Community college transfer students face many obstacles when transitioning to a four-year institution,” said Dr. Wynn Rosser, executive director of the Greater Texas Foundation.
The foundation is pleased A&M-Commerce has demonstrated a commitment to “remove those obstacles, and we are happy to provide scholarship assistance to that end,” Rosser said. “We must do more as a state to ensure that students understand the critical importance of not only finishing at a community college, but also transferring to receive a baccalaureate degree.”
A&M-Commerce Vice President for Advancement Sylvia Kelley said the Greater Texas Foundation has gone to “extraordinary measures to support students in this region, many of whom would be unable to attend college without their help.”
