Association for Computing Machinery Holds “Hour of Code”

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) local student chapter recently held an “Hour of Code” event where they taught students how to code under the supervision of Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dr. Unal “Zak” Sakoglu.

“Our students are organizing these kinds of events to raise the interest of other students and people in the local community to study computers and programming,” said Sakoglu. “I am glad our students are sharing their skills and time with other students and the local community.”

Students from different departments at the university learned to code games including “Minecraft” and “Jetpack Jumper” using Scratch, a free online service that allows users to program.

“In a world run by technology, it's time we catch up with computer programming which is central to solving future challenges,” said Vice Chairman of the ACM local student chapter Nithish Reddy Ambati. “The whole idea behind the ‘Hour of Code' event we conducted is to introduce computer science and the basics of computer programming to students and we hope it sparked interest in students to keep learning computer programming.”
