Banking on Success: Spotlight on Isaac ‘Wade’ Nicholson’s Banking Journey
Isaac “Wade” Nicholson's academic journey at East Texas A&M University's College of Business exemplifies the transformative impact of the university's innovative programs. A local of Commerce, Nicholson's decision to pursue a Bachelor's in Banking was driven by a deep connection to the university and the exceptional opportunities offered by the program.
“I chose ETAMU because I grew up in Commerce and saw the campus every day,” said Nicholson. “Attending a meeting for the banking program was a turning point—it showed me how deeply connected the faculty, students and community partners are.”
Since enrolling in 2021, Wade has made the most of ETAMU's experiential learning opportunities. The College of Business has equipped him with foundational knowledge in finance, marketing and management, complemented by internships and hands-on projects. His internship at City National Bank was a defining moment, leading to his current role as a BSA Analyst, where he works to ensure compliance with financial regulations and prevent financial crimes.
Christopher Burns, director of the Banking Program, emphasized the program's unique strengths: “Our Bachelor's in Banking program is designed in partnership with leading community banks, providing students unparalleled access to top-tier executives and real-world experiences. Students graduate not just with knowledge but with a competitive edge that often ensures job placement even before graduation.”
Nicholson's journey hasn't been without challenges. Reflecting on his early struggles, he shared, “During my first semester, I had a below 2.0 GPA, but I turned things around with focus and perseverance. Since then, I've been on the Dean's List for six consecutive semesters.”
Beyond academics, Nicholson found a sense of community through the Sigma Chi fraternity, which provided him with leadership opportunities, lifelong friendships and a robust professional network.
He also credited his professors for their support. “The faculty at ETAMU genuinely care about your success. They always have their doors open and are willing to help, whether it's with coursework or career advice.”
Reflecting on a key milestone in his academic career, Nicholson described participating in the annual banking conference as a standout moment.
“It was an incredible opportunity to network with industry leaders and gain insights into the latest trends in banking.”
Highlighting the program's strengths, he also emphasized the value of direct interactions with bank officers and industry leaders.
“The connections I've built through the program have opened doors to exciting career opportunities and provided real-world insights that are invaluable in the banking industry.”
For students considering a degree in business, Nicholson offers this advice: “Engage with new people and build connections. It's not just about what you know, but who you know.”
Wade's success story underscores the College of Business's commitment to preparing students for dynamic careers through innovative programs, dedicated mentorship, and strong industry ties.
