College of Business Hosts Inspiring Tenacious Leader Thursday Career Leadership Panel

The Tenacious Leader Thursday Career Leadership Panel, hosted by the East Texas A&M University College of Business’ Career Services, took place on November 14, 2024, at 8750 North Central Expressway in Dallas. The event brought together over 30 students from East Texas A&M University and Dallas College to hear insights from industry professionals about navigating the transition from academic studies to successful careers.

The panel featured an esteemed group of speakers, including Vince Arnold, ISACA College Representative; Brianna Butler, East Texas A&M Director of Philanthropy; Kelly Poquiz Burke, Founder of Career Slay; and Chris Salm, Sales Leader at State Farm. Moderated by Courtney Brazile of Dallas College, the discussion focused on key career topics such as leveraging transferable skills, building effective professional networks, and remaining open to new opportunities.

Students had the opportunity to hear personal stories of career pivots, overcoming challenges and achieving success through adaptability and determination. Panelists emphasized that leadership is not linear but evolves through resilience and a willingness to embrace change.

“Careers are rarely linear, and this panel gave students the chance to see how professionals adapt and thrive when faced with unexpected challenges,” remarked Senior Career Service Coordinator Shernay Wormley.

Butler shared advice that resonated strongly with attendees: “My biggest piece of advice is to take the chance and bet on yourself. You miss 99% of the opportunities you choose not to take. It's okay not to have everything figured out, but to truly be tenacious in any endeavor, go with what you know, and you'll continue to grow what you know.”

Similarly, Burke emphasized the value of advocating for oneself. “One of the mistakes I made early on in my career was not advocating for myself. Even if you’re just starting out, you have inherent transferable skills that add a lot of value, so make sure to negotiate for what you’re worth,” she said.

The event reinforced the College of Business's commitment to transforming lives by creating platforms for students to engage with accomplished professionals and gain practical advice. Students left with actionable insights and a better understanding of how to shape their professional futures. The Tenacious Leader Thursday Career Leadership Panel exemplifies the College of Business's dedication to empowering students and preparing them to become adaptable and confident leaders in their respective fields.
