Diwali To Celebrate Indian Culture on Oct. 24
COMMERCE, Texas – Celebrate Indian culture with the Diwali observance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Texas A&M University.
This annual campus event is free to the public and marks one of the most important celebrations in India. Hindus decorate their homes with small, earthen oil-fed lamps called “diyas” in welcome to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
“Last year there was standing-room-only,” said Diane Downing, adviser for the A&M-Commerce Indian Student Association, which is sponsoring the event.
Diwali will begin with a prayer song followed by a video, which explains the historical significance behind Diwali.
There will also be solo and group dances by girls and boys and a fashion show. Sweets will be served during intermission.
The event will be in the American Ballroom of the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
