From Aviation Dreams to Corporate Success: The Inspiring Journey of TAMUC Alumnus Richard Heitzman

Richard Heitzman's journey from aspiring aviation professional to a leadership role at CAE, the world's largest manufacturer of flight training devices, exemplifies the transformative power of education at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

His experience underscores how determination, coupled with the right academic support, can propel individuals toward remarkable career achievements. Heitzman's success story is a testament to the exceptional quality of A&M-Commece's College of Business programs and their capacity to equip graduates with the skills needed to excel in competitive industries.

Heitzman's educational journey is as inspiring as it is unconventional. In 2007, at the age of 42, he found himself at a crossroads after being passed over for a key promotion due to the lack of a formal degree. Determined to rewrite his story, Heitzman returned to school, beginning his academic journey at San Antonio College. His path eventually led him to A&M-Commerce in 2012, where he enrolled in the university's cutting-edge online degree program in Applied Arts & Sciences—one of the first of its kind. This program allowed him to balance his studies with a demanding career and family life.

“Texas A&M University-Commerce launched an online degree program that was exactly what I needed at the time,” Heitzman shared. “It was innovative, flexible and aligned perfectly with my schedule. On top of that, TAMUC's approval for Hazelwood veteran's benefits made it possible for me to pursue my dream without financial burden.”

After graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2014, Heitzman's career took off, leading to roles such as Regional Sales Manager and Technology Development Program Manager. But his ambition didn't stop there. Recognizing the need for advanced management skills, he returned to A&M-Commerce, this time to pursue an MBA through the university's Veteran’s MBA cohort program. The impact was immediate, and it wasn't long before Heitzman was promoted to his current position, managing three training programs and 14 instructors at CAE's DFW training center.

“The MBA program at the College of Business was a game-changer for me,” Heitzman reflected. “It equipped me with the leadership skills I needed to excel in my career. The knowledge I gained has been invaluable, allowing me to take on greater responsibilities and lead my team effectively.”

Dean Scott Wheeler of the TAMUC College of Business praised Heitzman's journey, stating, “Richard Heitzman's story is a powerful example of what our graduates can achieve. His success underscores the quality of education at the College of Business and the life-changing impact it can have on our students.”

Heitzman’s advice to those considering A&M-Commerce's College of Business? “Don't hesitate. The MBA program is a hidden gem. The education is top-notch, the instructors are world-class, and the value far exceeds the cost. If you're serious about advancing your career, A&M-Commerce is the place to be.”
