Music Professor Wins Regents Award

COMMERCE, Texas — Music professor and composer Dr. Ted Hansen reached a new high point in his career at Texas A&M University-Commerce when he became the first music professor to be named Regents Professor of the Texas A&M University System.

Thirteen full-time faculty from the nine A&M System universities won the Regents Professor Award for their achievements in teaching, research, and service. They were honored at a reception and dinner held at Texas A&M University in College Station on Dec. 4.

“This year’s recipients are the best of the best,” said Dr. Michael D. McKinney, chancellor of the A&M System. “All have made countless sacrifices to serve their students, colleagues, and fellow citizens, and have been rewarded with the gratitude of those whose lives they have touched,” McKinney said.

Winner of 11 consecutive ASCAPLUS Awards for his work as a composer, Hansen thanked his wife, Bobbie, for being patient and supportive and willing to let him do the time-consuming work of composing music.

“I feel lucky being at A&M-Commerce,” he said. “The music department has such a gifted group of performers.”

“We have always believed Ted to be the quintessential musician/teacher,” said Dr. Chris White, music department head. “We have performed his compositions, grown with his leadership and instruction, enjoyed his counsel and friendship, and now, celebrate his tremendous achievement,” he said.

Regents Professors receive a $9,000 stipend, a commemorative medallion, and a certificate.
