Premiere Performance of Hodie

“Hodie,” a new composition by Assistant Professor of Music David Davies for SATB (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) Choir, Soprano Soloist, and Wind Ensemble will premiere at the music department’s Holiday Gala on Dec. 9-10.  Davies has been on the faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce for over two years and his music has been performed on several continents and across the United States at prestigious venues such as Cooper Union and Carnegie Hall.

“Hodie” is a high-energy celebration of Christmas which reflects the composer’s interest in blending classic contrapuntal practices with more contemporary rhythmic structures.  The work was requested by Director of Bands and Instrumental Activities, Phil Clements, and Director of Choral Activities, Randall Hooper.

An additional version of “Hodie” scored for brass, organ, and percussion premiered at the Choral Candlelight Holiday Concert which took place on Dec. 1.

“It’s an honor and a thrill to have been asked by my colleagues to compose a work for this year’s Holiday Gala. I work with most of our music students in the classroom every week, but there’s nothing quite like the thrill of hearing (literally) hundreds of them bringing my music to life in performance under the excellent musical leadership of Randy Hooper and Phil Clements,” said Davies.

“It’s such a honor to have this opportunity to premiere this work, and it makes us as students feel special and teaches us about the professional world and the different ideals that surround it,” added Ryan Seekins, sophomore music education major.
