Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship awarded to Dr. Carlos Bertulani

Dr. Carlos Bertulani, professor of physics and astronomy, has been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to Brazil. The Fulbright Scholarship is an international education exchange program sponsored by the United States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Dr. Bertulani will travel to Brazil to conduct research on nuclear astrophysics and develop models for nuclear reactions under different theoretical scenarios.

“Being a Fulbright Scholar is a huge honor because the program is an authentic American mission to strengthen cultural and scientific ties with foreign countries,” said Bertulani. “I will join the ranks of distinguished participants in the program who have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs and university presidents.”

The Fulbright Scholarship, established in 1946, is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program in the world. Recipients of this award are chosen from a 12-member board that is appointed by the President of the United States. This program awards approximately 8,000 scholarships in over 155 different countries every year.

Bertulani's nomination for the award came from the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. The scholarship will cover full expenses for frequent visits to Brazil as well as residency for two months of each summer. During that time Bertulani will conduct research as well as getting involved in the community where he will stay.
