Puppies and Poses Brings Dog-Lovers and Yogis Together

On April 10, the Student Government Association (SGA), in collaboration with Campus Recreation, hosted Puppies and Poses at East Texas A&M University, combining two powerful stress relievers: puppies and yoga.

Students convened on the Great Lawn, between the Art Building and the Keith D. McFarland Science Building, where yoga instructor Harika Lingala conducted 15-minute sessions involving breathwork, stretches and poses. Meanwhile, in the same area, young dogs from the City of Commerce Animal Shelter played and interacted with students.

“We just wanted an event that allowed students to enjoy a little mental health day before exams and other things,” said Riley Alcox, an SGA committee member and East Texas A&M student who helped organize Puppies and Poses.

It likely comes as no surprise to anyone who attended Puppies and Poses that multiple studies and articles have touched on the mental health benefits of both dogs and yoga. With the end of another semester at East Texas A&M approaching, stress levels can be high for students, faculty and staff alike. Perhaps some exercise and a little free time with a furry friend is just what the doctor ordered.

Melissa Acosta, assistant director of fitness and wellbeing, indicated Puppies and Poses will be an annual event. To stay updated on this and other events around campus, be sure to follow the East Texas A&M Community Calendar.
