Ruth Ann White Day Set Oct. 3

COMMERCE, Texas — On Friday, Oct. 3, Texas A&M University-Commerce will present Ruth Ann White Day. This free event will take place from 8:30 until noon in the American Ballroom at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.

The theme is “Understanding Today’s Drug Culture.”

“The drug culture is impacting our cities and communities,” said Dr. LaVelle Hendricks of the A&M-Commerce Department of Counseling. “It is a myth that drug use is glamorous. Drug use will change a person’s values and behavior and harm themselves and others,” Hendricks said.

“Our students must continue to be educated of the health risks of drug use and abuse, including the risk of HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Three seminars will be presented, including “Illegal Drugs in Our Community,” by Tony Crouse, Harold McClure and Ron Plaxco of the Hopkins County/Sulphur Springs Special Crime Unit.

Martin Braddy, the Hopkins County District Attorney, will present “Penalties for Possession of Illegal Drugs.” Also, A&M-Commerce Assistant Professor of Counseling Dr. Linda Ball and A&M-Commerce Professor of Psychology and Special Education Dr. Steve Ball will offer “Signs of Drug Use and Treatment Available.”

Ruth Ann White Day was organized to recognize and honor Dr. Ruth Ann White for her contributions to the profession of student affairs. Dr. White is a retired A&M-Commerce professor and has held numerous student affairs positions at the local, state, and national levels.
