Saddle Bronc Riders Finish Strong at the Wharton College Rodeo

Lions rodeo team members, Slatyr Hunnicutt and Wacey Hathcock, placed first and second in the saddle bronc event at the Wharton College Rodeo in Wharton, Texas on April 25 and 26. This was the last rodeo of the year for the team, with Hunnicutt receiving Reserve Champion Saddle Bronc and Hathcock finishing fifth for the year in the southern region standings of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. In their first year, the Lions rodeo team finished in eighth place with both the men's and women's teams in the southern region standings.

“We are fortunate to have two great saddle bronc rodeo athletes on the A&M-Commerce rodeo team,” said Dr. Edward Romero, Lion's rodeo team advisor and coach. “Slatyr and Wacey had a great rodeo, and to go 1^st and 2^nd at the same rodeo speaks of their talent. I am proud of both young men for their accomplishments at the Wharton College rodeo.”

The A&M-Commerce rodeo program was revived in Fall 2013 with only 10 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association card holding students. The Lions rodeo team consists of six men and four women and competes in approximately five rodeos each semester. Members can also compete in individual events. The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association has over 3,500 student members and 137 member schools and universities.
