Social Work Students in Austin

Twenty Texas A&M University-Commerce social work students traveled to Austin on March 25 to visit the Capitol. Their trip served as a learning experience for how law-making processes can affect social policy and their line of work.

The trip was an opportunity for the students to learn about legislative processes and how governmental policies are made and enacted in the state of Texas. They also got the opportunity to meet with Representative Bryan Hughes. Hughes is a member of the Texas House of Representatives from District 5, which includes Camp, Harrison, Upshur and Wood counties. Hughes is also an attorney in his hometown of Mineola, TX.

“This is an important opportunity for the students because as future social workers they need to be aware of not only the political process, but how important social policy is for the populations we serve,” said Assistant Professor of Social Work Rebecca Judd. “Being able to travel to Austin, meet with Representative Bryan Hughes, and experience the atmosphere of the Capitol helps to bring to life what is taught in the classroom.”
