Southland Conference Schedule Revealed for Lion Basketball
COMMERCE – The 2024-25 Southland Conference schedules have been released for the Texas A&M University-Commerce basketball teams on Friday afternoon.
The Lion women finished fifth in the SLC a year ago, while the men finished seventh, with both teams winning at least one game at the SLC Tournament.
With the addition of Stephen F. Austin and UTRGV bringing the number of basketball playing schools in the SLC to 12, each team is slated to play 20 conference games each.
To accommodate for the two extra conference games, each team will play two SLC games in December, before beginning the rest of conference play in January.
The two December games for the Lions come at Houston Christian and UIW. The Lion men go to the Huskies on December 5 and the Cardinals on December 7, while the women play in Houston on December 14 and San Antonio on December 20.
For the second consecutive season during conference play, the women will play on Thursdays and Saturdays, while the men will play on Mondays and Saturdays.
The Lion women begin the New Year with home games against Nicholls and McNeese on January 2 and 4, respectively. A&M-Commerce is 6-2 against the two teams combined over the past two seasons.
The men host the defending SLC champion Cowboys on January 4 and the Colonels on January 6. A&M-Commerce and Nicholls played in the SLC Tournament Quarterfinals last season.
The first road conference game in 2025 comes at UTRGV on January 9 for the Lion women. It is the first ever meeting for A&M-Commerce against the SLC newcomers.
For the men, their first road trip of 2025 is at Northwestern State on January 11 and at the Vaqueros on January 13. The Lions and the Demons played three times a year ago, with A&M-Commerce taking two wins, including in the first round of the SLC Tournament. The Lion men are also playing UTRGV for the first time in the regular season.
The next weekend, the women welcome Southeastern and New Orleans on January 16 and 18, respectively. A&M-Commerce is looking for its first win over Southeastern since joining the SLC, while the Lions have never lost to the Privateers at home.
The Lion men host UNO on January 18, both teams have split each of the four meetings since A&M-Commerce joined the Southland, while SLU comes to Commerce on January 20. The two Lion team split a year ago, with both winning on the road.
On January 23, the Lion women play at Stephen F. Austin, going up against the Ladyjacks for the second time ever and first as conference foes. The only other meeting between the two teams came in Nacogdoches in 2013.
The Lions continue the road trip at defending SLC regular season champion Lamar on January 25. A&M-Commerce was the only team to beat the Cardinals in conference play a year ago, the two teams also met in the SLC Tournament Semifinals.
A&M-Commerce and Lamar men are 2-2 against each other the past two seasons and the Lions visit Beaumont on January 25 and play at SFA on January 27. A&M-Commerce and SFA men are meeting for the first time since 1985 and for the 122nd time overall.
The return trip home for the Lion women comes with a game against defending SLC Tournament Champion A&M-Corpus Christi on January 30 and Northwestern State on February 1. The Lions are 4-2 against the Lady Demons in the past two years, having not lost at home.
The Lion men host the Demons on February 1 and the Islanders on February 3. A&M-Corpus Christi finished second in the conference a year ago.
The second swing of conference play for the women begins at McNeese on February 6 and Nicholls on February 8, while the Lion men head to the Colonels on February 8 as well and at the Cowboys on February 10.
The Ladyjacks make their first trip to Commerce on February 13, while Lamar comes to town on February 15. On the men’s side, Lamar plays in the Field House on February 15 as well, while the Lumberjacks play their first game in Commerce since 1984 on February 17.
The final full road weekend trip of the regular season is at New Orleans on February 20 and Southeastern on February 22, while the men play in Hammond, Louisiana, on February 22 and at the Privateers on February 24.
The Lion women host their final two home games against HCU on February 27 and UIW on March 1, while the men host the Cardinals on March 1 as well and close out the regular season at home against HCU on February 3.
To close out the regular season, the Lion women play at Northwestern State on March 5.
