Susmita Bashir: Leading the Way to a Bright ‘Verizon’

Susmita Bashir's remarkable journey from a graduate student at Texas A&M University-Commerce to a Technical Program Manager at Verizon is a testament to her drive and expertise. Leading a global team of more than 100 in Verizon's 5G Home Internet division, Bashir has made a significant impact in one of the world's leading tech companies. Her story is one of perseverance, leadership, and the power of embracing new challenges.

“My time in the College of Business at A&M-Commerce was transformative,” Bashir reflects. “The comprehensive curriculum in Business Analytics equipped me with cutting-edge skills in data analysis, SQL, Python, and more. The faculty's unwavering guidance and mentorship ensured that I was prepared not just for the challenges of today, but for the ever-evolving future of the industry.”

During her time in the College of Business, Bashir served as President of the Marketing and Business Analytics student organization (MKTBA), organizing numerous networking events and fostering connections with industry leaders. “Being part of the student organization allowed me to hone my leadership skills. Taking part in events like Tech Titan and collaborating with fellow students from various backgrounds enriched my learning experience and expanded my professional network,” she recalls.

Her journey is a testament to her hard work and the strength of the Business Analytics program. “The hands-on projects and internships I secured through A&M-Commerce's Career Services provided invaluable real-world experience. It was these opportunities that directly led to my post-graduation career success,” Bashir adds.

Dr. Zaki Malik, Department Head and Professor of Business Analytics, speaks highly of the program’s role in shaping leaders like Bashir:

Today, Bashir oversees agile project delivery while also mentoring future business leaders. Reflecting on her fondest memories at A&M-Commerce, she cites the lasting friendships, wide range of students, and campus life as key elements of her enriching experience.

“Beyond academics, A&M-Commerce offered me a balanced life. Whether I was at the recreation center or building lifelong connections, the experience shaped me into the leader I am today,” Bashir said.

Addressing her advice to prospective students, Bashir added, “Don't hesitate to jump into projects, network with professionals and engage with your fellow students. The College of Business offers so many opportunities to grow, and if you embrace them, the possibilities are endless.”

As Bashir continues to break new ground at Verizon, she remains an inspiration for future A&M-Commerce graduates, exemplifying the success that comes from combining hard work, a strong educational foundation, and a commitment to leadership.
