TAMUC Unveils New School of Music at Kickoff Concert
Texas A&M University-Commerce recently celebrated the redesignation of its School of Music at a special kickoff concert on September 29. 2024.
A capacity crowd in the Jack and Lou Finney Concert Hall saw performances from multiple ensembles, such as the percussion ensemble, trombone studio, chamber singers and more. The night was capped off by the world premiere performance of “Melodies Unheard,” a piece for choir and wind ensemble by John Wasson that was commissioned for the concert.
A former A&M-Commerce faculty member, Wasson is an accomplished composer who has been commissioned to compose or arrange for ensembles such as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Air Force Band and the Dallas Winds. He has also composed and produced music for organizations such as National Geographic, United Way and the Ken Burns American Heritage Prize. Many people may know his piece “Caravan,” which was heard in the final scene of the Academy Award-winning film Whiplash.
“Melodies Unheard” is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of music students at A&M-Commerce and around the world.
