The Accounting and Finance Department Hosts Successful Mentorship Socials to Jumpstart Student Success
The Department of Accounting and Finance at Texas A&M University-Commerce successfully hosted two mentorship socials on September 9 and 10, aimed at providing students with the tools and connections they need to thrive both academically and professionally.
These engaging events, attended by approximately 40 students, serve as part of the College of Business's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical experience, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers.
During the socials, faculty mentors introduced themselves by sharing their professional backgrounds, reasons for becoming professors, research interests and personal anecdotes, allowing students to connect on a deeper level. The event provided students with valuable insights into key department resources, personalized career advice, and information about mentorship, internships and career opportunities. Each student had the opportunity to select a mentor aligned with their career aspirations, who will meet with them regularly throughout the academic year to offer guidance on academic progress, career development and personal challenges.
“The mentorship socials are just one example of how we are committed to not only providing an excellent education but ensuring that our students are continuously engaged, learning from industry experts, and applying classroom theory in real-world scenarios,” said Dr. Caroline Hartman, department head of Accounting and Finance. “Additionally, through activities such as the IRS Citizen Academy, Accounting Town Hall, speaker panels, and our annual Business to Industry events, we provide countless opportunities for students to network with industry professionals, broaden their horizons, and prepare for meaningful careers. Our goal is to ensure that every student has the chance to make a lasting impact in the communities that they serve and beyond.”
The College of Business and its Department of Accounting and Finance, Department of Management and Economics, and Department of Marketing and Business Analytics remain dedicated to implementing innovative initiatives such as workshops, panel discussions, competitions, webinars, among others, to bring together students and industry professionals. These activities provide invaluable hands-on learning opportunities, reinforcing the college's mission to foster academic excellence and professional success.
