University Addresses Islamophobia
Texas A&M University-Commerce hosted Getting to Know You: Addressing Islamophobia through Mutual Understanding, Building Trust & Respect on February 2.
The event was a unique opportunity to learn about some of the diversity of A&M-Commerce, involving A&M-Commerce's administration, faculty, students and members of the Muslim community. The event was an opportunity to learn more about one another through discussion and dialogue.
“Central to the experience was learning more about the issues surrounding and involving the Muslim community,” said Dr. Edward Romero, chief diversity officer.
A&M-Commerce President Dan R. Jones offered the welcome address, followed by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Adolfo Benavides. Jacques Fuqua, executive director of global programs, moderated the event. Speakers included Romero, Amir Rahman of the East Texas Islamic Association, John Mark Jones, director of international student services, and Syed Fayyaz Hassan of the Muslim Democratic Caucus of Texas.
“We had a great turnout, with a mix of administration, faculty, staff, students and community members in attendance,” said Romero. “The overall response to the event was quite positive–attendees found it to be informative and enjoyable while providing a much needed opportunity to undertake individual introspections of an important topic.”
