University Playhouse Will Present “The Further Adventures of Tom and Huck”

The University Playhouse will present “The Further Adventures of Tom and Huck” by Don Nigro from April 28 to May 2, at 8 p.m. and May 3, at 3 p.m.

The evening of theatre consists of nine short plays by one of America's most prolific and critically acclaimed playwrights.

“Don Nigro was inspired by the cheesy B movies from the 1950s and ‘60s, but he put his own spin on things,” said director of “Dr. Sinistrari on Zombie Island” Keri Zukoski.

“Bringing together nine different plays, directed by nine student directors, stage managed by nineteen student stage managers and designed by five student designers has been a strenuous, yet rewarding process”  said Production Stage Manager Tyler McKinney. “I am excited for the community to see it.”

All aspects of the production are undertaken by graduate and undergraduate students, with guidance by faculty member, Professor Rebecca Worley.

“There is an eerie, almost macabre quality in the writing, like in ghost stories,” said Worley. “So we decided that the general setting for the plays will be in a haunted attic.”

Nigro explores the question of what is real and what is not.

“The play shows us what might be going on in the mind of an insane person,” said director of “The Tale of Mr. McGregor” Christine York.

Nigro's play even contains remnants of the childhood of the characters from Mark Twain's books.

“Tom is still the charming conman, looking for the next adventure, and Huck is still ready to go along,” director of the title play, “The Further Adventures of Tom and Huck” Kati Barrett said. “We all grow up, and life isn't the storybook fantasy we thought it would be.”

Filling out the rest of the playbill are “Creatrix” directed by Cecilli Cozine, “Drury Lane” directed by Melissa Payne, “The Little People” directed by Chris Smith, “The Rat Catcher's Tale” directed by Micah Haynes “Psalms of the Scattered Bones” directed by Joseph Waller and “Event Horizon” directed by Benjamin Kennedy.
