University Welcomes Civil Rights Leader Dr. Robert Green
Texas A&M University-Commerce is pleased to host Dr. Robert Green for the return of the Sam Rayburn Speaker Series on Thursday Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Sam Rayburn Student Center conference rooms.
“I am pleased to be able to reintroduce this prestigious speaker series after a period of fifteen years and am particularly proud that the inaugural event will feature Dr. Robert Green, who was a friend and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Texas A&M University-Commerce Interim President Ray M. Keck III.
Green has dedicated his life to addressing issues of social injustice and inequality. During a critical period of the Civil Rights movement, Green served as the education director for Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) from 1965 to 1967. Green holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Michigan State University, where he served as dean and professor emeritus for the College of Urban Development.
“His message concerning society's fight for social justice and equality is as relevant today as it was during the height of the 60's Civil Rights movement,” said Keck. “I now realize that the work of the SCLC, which I followed as an undergraduate in the 60's, is perhaps the most significant social movement of our time. It is an honor to meet a man at the center of that movement.”
During the event, Green will discuss his latest book, “At the Crossroads of Fear and Freedom,” a memoir including untold stories of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's. Students attending the event will be able to receive a signed copy of Green's latest book for free.
