A Conversation with Duane
Why did you chose study abroad?
I decided to study abroad for several reasons. As a future social worker, I wanted to know how other countries solve their social problems. In the United States our social problems stem from racism, economic status, and gender based. I wanted to explore other countries’ social problems. Second, I wanted to travel out of the country and experience Costa Rica. What surprised me the most about this experience was the level of professionalism their social workers must have. I was expecting Costa Rica's level of education to be inferior to the United States. Instead they have adapted to a level that fits their nation. The qualifications to be a social worker are almost equivalent to becoming a doctor.
What was your favorite part about study abroad?
My favorite part about the trip was the environment in general. We got to hike the jungle, meet with the locals, and we compared their city life to their “country living.” I intend on using this experience to help others here in the United States by using some of their techniques for helping others.
What advice would you have for students considering study abroad?
Some advice that I would give to future students is exercise several weeks before you take the trip, stay hydrated, and have enough money to last you several days(about $400). I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who wants to make a difference.
