Mr. Garth Gundersen is the newly appointed Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Pride Marching Band. In this capacity he also serves as principal conductor of the Symphonic Band, and teaches courses in advanced instrumental conducting, wind band repertoire, administration and rehearsal techniques, and marching band methods. Mr. Gundersen also serves as the Director of the Texas A&M–Commerce Drum Major/ Leadership/Colorguard Camp and Marching Arts Director Symposium, which collectively draws over 550 prospective studentsand band directors to campus each summer.

Most recently, Mr. Gundersen served as the Assistant Director of Fine Arts for Killeen Independent School District (ISD). In this capacity, he oversaw the comprehensive instrumental music programs across Killeen ISD, comprising five high schools, 11 middle schools, and 31 elementary schools.

Prior to his tenure in Killeen, Mr. Gundersen dedicated 26 years to shaping the musical landscape in the greater Austin area. His leadership roles–including Assistant Band Director at Westlake High School and Stephen F. Austin High School, as well as Head Band Director at W. Charles Akins High School, Robert E Hendrickson High School, and James Bowie High School–exemplify his commitment to musical education and excellence. Under his guidance, his bands achieved remarkable success, including performances at the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic in Chicago and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Mr. Gundersen was also the co-conductor of the prestigious Austin Youth Orchestra, where he inspired and mentored the next generation of musical talents.

Mr. Gundersen's academic credentials further underscore his dedication to the art of music. He holds a master’s degree in Music Education and Conducting from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied under esteemed mentors such as Jerry Junkin, Bob Duke and Paula Crider. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Louisiana State University, where he served as drum major of the Golden Band from TigerLand.

A highly respected figure in the musical community, Mr. Gundersen is a sought-after adjudicator and clinician. His professional affiliations with prestigious organizations such as TMEA, TBA, Phi Beta Mu, TMAA and Pi Kappa Lambda underscore his commitment to the advancement of music education.
