A Conversation with Jamie Klugiewicz

What is your current employment/career?

I am currently a teaching assistant for the doctoral courses, Methods of Psychological Assessment and Intake Interviewing Skills at Antioch University-New England.

What do you enjoy most about your current role as a teaching assistant?

I enjoy being able to help students from the perspective of someone who has been through the process. Moreover, throughout my time at A&M-Commerce and as a licensed clinician prior to entering the doctoral program, I developed an affinity for assessment and intake interviewing/case conceptualization as part of the larger process of working with those receiving mental health services. I take pride in helping students become more comfortable working with psychological instruments in relation to both administration and interpretation, as well as create an environment where their clients/patients feel safe and heard.

How did A&M-Commerce prepare you for your current position?

Dr. Curt Carlson's Cognitive Psychology and Dr. Steve Ball's Neuromechanisms/Biological Bases of Behavior have been influential as driving and supportive forces in my clinical work. Each of these professors displayed such a passion for the material, as well as an uncanny ability to teach concepts that can be difficult to grasp. I will be forever grateful to them and the investment they made in my learning.

What advice do you have for students?

I would tell them to go for it! In relation to the Applied Psychology master's program specifically, I can say that I was well prepared to sit for the licensure exam and begin clinical work upon graduation. I had excellent clinical supervisors and research advisors who cared about my education and always had my stated goals in mind. The psychology degree programs at A&M-Commerce provide an excellent space if you have a passion for psychology and want to be in a learning environment that will not only support that passion but encourage it to grow.
