Originally hailing from Virginia, Matt moved to Texas to be with his now wife back in 2009. Over the years he has worked in a number of industries, from retail to IT, before finding his love of accounting after returning to college later in life. He received his CPA in 2021 and remains a practicing auditor since 2018, though with a much lighter load since he started teaching.

A Conversation with Matt:

Why do you like teaching?

I like getting to pass on the knowledge, experience and the tips and tricks I've learned in the real world that don't always translate from the text.

What is your favorite course to teach?

From my current courses, I like Principles 2 most of all since it has the broadest usage and appeal for all majors because it deals with planning and budgets. In general, I like non-profit and governmental because it's a different way to look at accounting and it is surprising how widely used and little known it tends to be in the field.

What do you like most about your career?

Broadly, I like the ability to work in any field I truly want to. Accounting and auditing lets you work alongside or within an industry of your choice. My background is with non-profits/governmental entities and specifically healthcare, but there's nothing stopping me from working with say book publishers or video game developers, on top of teaching.

Who is one of your role models and did they impact you?

I have three older brothers and one younger brother that have all influenced me in different ways. They're all more IT and computer-focused than I am but had approaches to problems that really helped when I started learning accounting.

What is your favorite place in Commerce?

I really like going to Mugs when I have a chance; I have an addiction to coffee that I blatantly refuse to treat.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

When I'm not teaching, planning to teach, working on teaching or auditing on the side, I like to play video games. Normally RPGs, strategy games or other easy to pause things if something comes up.
