Monique Burkley is an admissions counselor at A&M-Commerce at Dallas where she enjoys walking new Lions through the admissions experience. In her role, Monique is a helper, a guide, a supporter, an advocate and an encourager. The best part of Monique’s job is when she sees her students meet their goals and achieve their dreams.
A Conversation with Monique
How do you help students at A&M-Commerce?
I am an admissions counselor whose primary goal is to help recruit new Lions to join the A&M Commerce family. I assist prospective students through the application process until they are admitted and registered for classes.
What do you like most about your career?
I like meeting, connecting with and helping students who I see a little bit of myself in. Not everyone enters college knowing exactly what they want to do and who they are. Some students need a little extra help and guidance. They need just one staff member to see the potential in them. When these students meet their goals, I get to be there as a witness. It is a very special moment, and it's the best part of my job!
Tell us about your education journey.
I am a first-generation, two-time college graduate from Dallas, Texas. I received my B.S. in Kinesiology and Sport Studies from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Later, I attended the University of Texas at San Antonio to complete a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy shopping for, collecting and reading great books. I spend most of my free time with my family and friends. My hobbies include hiking, painting, crafting and dancing. I am also a proud dog mom to a Pug named Rose Marie.
What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?
A&M-Commerce is the perfect place to grow and discover who you are as a person in a controlled and supportive environment. When I was a student at A&M-Commerce, I felt like everyone was truly rooting for my success and there were always resources and opportunities available to me.
