A Conversation with Persephone D. Harris
What is your current employment/career?
I am currently working as a School Psychologist (LSSP) in the Greenville ISD.
What do you like most about being a school psychologist in a school district? What do you find challenging?
I LOVE everything about being a LSSP. I am able to wear several different hats. I provide counseling services, conduct evaluations to determine special education eligibility, consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, and administrators, and I love each part about it! The district I work in allows LSSPs to focus directly on our area versus the dual role that diagnosticians are able to cover- I do not like case managing!
How did A&M-Commerce prepare you for your current position?
The most influential psychology courses I took at A&M Commerce were the required assessment classes for my program. I feel like these classes best prepared me for my field and I learned how to write and report evaluation results which is a big chunk of my career. Developmental psychology was another informative class that prepared me for my field.
What advice do you have for students?
I would tell anyone to go for it! And specifically in the field of school psychology. As I mentioned there is so much flexibility in this field, and LSSPs are needed EVERYWHERE. We do such important work for our students and their families. The professors I had during my time at this university made my process smooth and provided me with the knowledge and other tools I would need to be successful.
