Sarah Baker Associate Vice President and Comptroller
- Alum
- Staff
Sarah Baker has always been extremely gifted with numbers. Following her talents, she chose accounting as her field of study at A&M-Commerce. Baker feels it was God's timing that opened a graduate assistant position in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration, just as she was graduating. She got the job, and the rest is history!
Along the way, Baker has served in several positions at the university, with growing levels of responsibility. No matter her position, she is always ready to help others and learn new things.
When Baker isn't dealing with numbers, she is best known as a true country girl. Years ago, her supervisor commented that anyone who is able to work in the hayfields is bound to have a strong work ethic!
How do you help students at A&M-Commerce?
“My roles have been back-office approaches to helping the university succeed. While I may not get to see students personally each day, my office is responsible for ensuring that operations continue to run smoothly and our financial assets are protected. We serve as the infrastructure supporting the faculty and staff directly involved with the students. However, I am always thrilled when I get to visit with students and will help them however I can.”
A Conversation with Sarah
What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?
“A&M-Commerce is a great place to get your education. The professors are top-notch, and the size of our university allows you to create personal and meaningful relationships that last a lifetime. The people at this institution want to see you succeed both personally and professionally. You are more than just a face in a crowd; you are an individual.”
What do you like most about your career?
“It's been so varied over the years! When I was just a freshman, I started as a student worker in the Office of the Provost. I was hired in a permanent position, doing accounting for grants, a month before I graduated with both of my degrees. Through the years, I've taken on a variety of challenges within the accounting department, and I am now serving as the interim associate vice president for finance and administration. I've enjoyed meeting so many of our university's faculty and staff as I’ve worked with them in various capacities. We have such neat people with interesting stories and backgrounds. This campus is like a family to me.”
