A Conversation with Shannon Pruden
How do you help students?
I establish and maintain partnerships with businesses and foundations, which help support students in their pursuit of higher education. Support is provided through program funding, scholarship funding, and other forms of financial support.
Why did you choose your career/what draws you to your discipline?
I fell into my career purely by accident. I had just finished my MFA when a friend told me about an opening at a non-profit in Lindale. I looked it up and thought it sounded like something I could be good at. I applied and got the job.
When I applied for the position, I had no idea that “fundraiser” was even a real job. However, I started and was good at it. I found that I really enjoyed supporting a cause I was passionate about through fundraising. I enjoyed both the relational and administrative aspects of the job, and I got to be creative. I was with that organization for almost five years.
After that, I tried a few other related disciplines in non-profit work. However, fundraising has always been a part of my job no matter the position.
Describe an obstacle you overcame in the past or are working to overcome to achieve a personal or professional goal.
When I graduated from high school, I immediately started my college career. I wasn't quite mature enough for it at the time, and I ended up only finishing a semester or two before dropping out.
Later, after I had children, I decided I was ready to pursue my education. I was a stay-at-home mom, with a two-year-old and a four-year-old. Going to school while taking care of two little ones was difficult and I often felt overwhelmed. However, I stuck to it and finished my bachelor's degree and master's degree. Working so hard to earn those degrees has given me an appreciation for higher education and has pushed me to grow professionally and personally.
