I learned so much, not just about the country I was visiting, but myself and my future in social work.

A Conversation with Stephanie

Why did you choose to participate in the study abroad program?

I chose to study abroad because I love cultural immersion while traveling. I felt studying abroad would grant the opportunity to experience a population without the typical tourist traps. I was really excited to visit a new country and see social work in action from their perspective.

What surprised you the most about your study abroad experience?

I was extremely surprised by Costa Rica's approach to child protective services. They truly take on the viewpoint that it takes a village to raise a child. It was so impressive for them to not have an answer to some of the questions asked when comparing U.S. child protection services to Costa Rican. It was impressive because they do not have the problems we have and therefore did not need a solution.

What was your favorite part of the study abroad trip?

My favorite part of the trip was the time we spent visiting the schools. Our instructors challenged us to think about our own viewpoint of what makes a school successful vs what some of the schools in Costa Rica are doing. I truly had to take a step back as to what success looks like and why. The experience was not only humbling but also enlightening.

How will you use your experiences in the future?

I have already altered my thought processes after having visited Costa Rica. I have been actively working to think about the cause of a problem to arrive at a solution. Before I was more solution focused, now I am placing more energy into understanding how or why something went wrong. In doing so, I may be able to impact a more substantial change.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about participating in the study abroad program?

If someone is considering studying abroad in the future, I would advise them to do whatever it takes to go! The experience is utterly amazing! I learned so much, not just about the country I was visiting, but myself and my future in social work. There is no day that is boring. The itinerary was chock full of learning and fun!
