Become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

Interested in becoming a food and nutrition expert? With a licensure in RDN, you’ll provide evidence-based guidance to promote health and manage diseases.

The following are the steps needed to gain your RDN:

  • Complete a minimum of a bachelor's degree at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college and coursework accredited by the ACEND of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and complete the requirements for a Verification Statement.
  • Complete an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program (Coordinated Program or FEM Graduate Program), which includes experience in clinical nutrition, food service management and community nutrition.
  • Complete a graduate degree.
  • Pass a national board examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) for more information regarding the Registration Examination for Dietitians.

Licensure

RDNs are required to be licensed/certified in some states. Texas has a voluntary state license for dietitians, but many employers require RDNs to be licensed in the state. To obtain licensure, the applicant must hold an active registration from the CDR. Refer to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website for additional information.

For more information about state licensure requirements, visit the CDR.

Program Accreditation

The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at East Texas A&M University has been granted candidacy accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
