Social Welfare Minor

Explore the social welfare institution and learn to analyze how its policies and services interact with other social forces in responding to social problems of clients at all levels of systems. Emphasis is given to the examination of how social policies affect oppressed populations

In this course, you will be acquainted with the laws involved in working with children and families and the impact the laws have on clients. Problems families face are reviewed to help you develop an understanding of family functioning and how policies, referrals and services influence the multiple outcomes a client or family may face during an interaction with a child welfare agency, judicial system or law enforcement agency.

This elective course provides you with a general overview of the theories, assessments and interventions involved with helping families. Information includes working with varied family structures and with families facing divorce, death, domestic violence and other social problems.

Examine biophysical, psychological and behavioral domains of human development. Major theories presented underpin assessment and interventions with individuals, families, groups, vulnerable and disenfranchised populations and the ethical implications for practice. The client systems presented work within the broader context of a systems approach.
