Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains one of the most relevant practical fields to which linguistics contributes. Humans increasingly use their most important tool for interaction, language, in direct fashion not just with natural but also artificial intelligences. While probabilistic approaches command most of public interest, scientists understand that explicit knowledge about language and knowledge about knowledge as formalized by linguistic semanticists are necessary backbones for explainable and scalable intelligent technologies. Dr. Hempelmann has over 20 years of experience in these fields, both academically and in various projects with industry partners. He has led the research departments of two search engines and most recently pioneered a project on humor and AI under Amazon’s prestigious Grand Challenge breeder for cutting-edge research.
